Community Solutions Podcast

Sep 30, 2019 We welcome Crystal mayor, Jim Adams back to the show and council member, Nancy LaRoche. Crystal is a city on the move. Businesses are moving to Crystal. Parks are being beautified... and city debt is going down? It's all true. There has been one way of governing that gets passes down from groups like the League of MN Cities to every other city in the state, but this city is bucking the trend. This city is finding private solutions to things that have historically been paid for with public money (that means your taxes). They also have found alternatives to hidden taxes like assessments. They are paying for things in cash, instead of taking on new debt, and the home sales market is exploding. There are a lot of things here that other cities could learn from. The level of innovation and new-think have provided an entirely new and refreshing approach to city government... and its long past due.

We also discuss the abysmal drop in school test scores over the last four years across the state of Minnesota. They love to trumpet when things are going well, but when scores are down, they just never talk about it. Surprise, surprise... scores have been down for four years and there's been nary a word. Well, we'll talk about it.
