Community Solutions Podcast

Oct 23, 2019

www.commsolutions.com- We've mentioned county attorneys on the podcast, but haven't really discussed what they do. It is an elected position, but one that we haven't taken seriously (just like any other nonpartisan position in this state). So few of them are contested. They are involved in everything from child and juvenile protection, to enforcing child support, to handling misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor lawsuits, to working on grand jury cases, and much, much more. County attorneys are overstepping the boundaries of their elected position by outright declaring that they will refuse to prosecute certain crimes (Dallas County, Shelby County, ), and lobbying for the creation and rescinding of certain laws. Some just make it up as they go along. Like every other nonpartisan job, political slants have began to make their way in to color how this job is executed. We need to pay more attention to these seats.

In the Local Lowdown, we let you know about Isanti County's recent approval of Tobacco 21. What does it mean when a county enacts a policy like this instead of cities? Sherburne County has already said no, but Wright County decided to green light it. Also Mayor Carter of St. Paul has changed out some of its street sweepers for environmentally friendly vehicles.

I know, I know... it's a little late, but we had a couple of timely interviews come up which delayed this podcast from coming out, but we recorded this right after the annual remembrance of September 11th. We revisit where we were, how it makes us feel today, and what we believe the fallout has been over the last 18 years.
