Community Solutions Podcast

Jan 19, 2020

www.commsolutionsmn.com- Public school districts will often have an official group called a Legislative Action Coalition (LAC). They are a lobbying group that is supposed to be made up from people in the community. When you read their platform, however, you begin to question whether that's true.  You'd expect to see planks about graduation rates, student achievement, teacher accountability, etc., but no. It is obviously written by some outside group. They want to get rid of referendums, so that voters don't get to approve their increases. They want a more diverse workforce. They are pushing a for tiered licensing system. None of these things are issues parents worry about. Every school district seems to have most of the same goals, so there's no way it's written locally. We look at Robbinsdale, HopkinsOsseo, and Grand Rapids to prove it.

In the Local Lowdown, we follow up on some news from the President's Executive Order that allows for counties to opt out of taking mass refugees.  Beltrami county decided to opt out of having mass refugee settlements. House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler (The Fonz) threatened Beltrami County to pull state funding if they don't change their minds. So much for local control.
