City councils seem to clamor for pools, golf courses, walking trails, community centers, and hockey rinks. Do they really help bring people to your city? Residents shell out millions of dollars and often their cities go into major debt to get the latest and greatest attractions for their current and prospective residents.
Do people really move to a city because of a community center, or is it an excuse not to take care of larger problems like lousy schools, increased crime rates, or high taxes? Golden Valley payed $18 million for a new community center, and touted that they were cutting costs because they wanted to spend twice as much. This is how government works, folks. Carlsbad, CA built a $70 million golf course, where most municipal golf courses cost in between $10-$25 million.
Also, we try to guess whether there are any unbreakable records anymore. How long will they last? No, we're not talking about Nancy Pelosi's consecutive congress terms.
