Community Solutions Podcast

Feb 15, 2022

www.commsolutionsmn.com- Today, we bring friend of the show, John Augustine, on the podcast from the Legislative Evaluation Assembly of Minnesota. He goes over their 2021 Legislative Report, which highlights a number of bills and ratings of some legislators in holding to true conservative principles. They bestowed recognition upon a number of Honorees: Steve Drazkowski, Steve Green, Matt Grossell, Eric Lucero, Shane Mekeland, Erik Mortensen, and Jeremy Munson. We discuss the state of lawmaking at the capitol, and why we are in dire need of change.

Too many laws are passed behind closed doors. There used to be 1,000 floor measures taken a year. Now there are a handful. All of these omnibus bills should be outlawed. There were omnibus bills in 2021 for finance and policy (do finance and policy belong in the same bill?), taxes, higher education, agriculture, housing, and health and human services. They go into their smoke-filled rooms and shoehorn a ton of unrelated things into one bill, just so that each legislator can get their pet projects passed. In the meantime, a ton of terrible ideas are also being passed by overwhelming votes from both parties. This isn't what we voted for. This isn't the way things should be, and there are huge local implications. John breaks it all down for us.

Also, get a ticket to their banquet while you can.
