Community Solutions Podcast

Mar 16, 2020 You can hardly talk about education in this state without bringing up Education MN. They are the major public educator union in the state. They have 80,000 members and use their money to great influence on the political scene. They spent $2 Million on elections in 2018 through their PAC. They also have a robust policy advocacy arm that uses union dues at the legislature for pushing things like: fully funding public schools, attracting and retaining teachers of color, lowering class sizes, hiring more support staff, etc. They are even willing to pay teachers to miss a day of work to go lobby at the capitol. They also keep an "enemies list" on their website. They push hard to make sure the environment is right for local referendums. Nowhere on the list of what they intend to do is increase graduation rates, increase scores in math and reading, or college readiness. Employees need someone to go to bat for them, but these unions shouldn't be messing with what gets taught. We need to start asking questions.

We also take some time to discuss the knowledge level of most Americans regarding George Washington, the Revolutionary War, and other important historic events in honor of President's Day.
